Common Elements of Emo Hairstyles

At 1:31 PM
While there may be different schools of thought as to what the term “emo” actually means, the general rule of emo hairstyles seems to be “anything goes!” Like the genre, emo hairstyles and fashion represent self expression and emotion. Emo boys and girls are not afraid to be themselves. Likewise they are not afraid to try crazy new things on their hair, depending on how they are feeling at the time. As individualized as the styles may be, there seem to be three common traits.

Regardless of the natural color of the hair, it is usually dyed a rich color of dark brunette or jet black.

Once the base color is achieved, bright highlights are put in anywhere and everywhere, in whatever pattern is desired. Likely colors are maroon, blue, and pink. For an added touch of individuality, try putting some stripes or small patterns of darker color within the bright color.

Regardless of how the chunks and spikes are arranged, there is no negotiation with the style of the bangs. A heavy bang with a deep side part that sweeps across the forehead is crucial to achieving the emo look. If a bit of the eye is covered, all the better. Using some hair glue to keep the bangs flat and straight will keep it looking right.

Surely no emo boy or girl would hold to any “rules” regarding their style since it is based on individuality but there is a definite preference of rich colors and sweeping bangs. Once you get that in place, you cannot go wrong when designing or styling your emo hair as long as you are true to what you feel.
