Hair Trend: Choppy Shoulder-Length Cuts

At 2:12 PM

Your mantra may be new year, new do—but you’re best off taking stock of your “short” options before getting a dramatic cut. According to hairstylist Ted Gibson, Anne Hathaway’s mane man, “Even though everyone is wearing shorter hair, it’s important not to be a slave to the trend.” In other words: Make sure you get a short do that complements your unique features.

“Think of your face shape, your jawline, the length of your neck—all of those things contribute to how short or long you can go,” says Gibson, adding that keeping some length will likely be more flattering than a pixie. “If it’s a little longer it’s slimming and more angular on the face and neck.”

Besides, according to hairstylists Patrick Melville and Jessica Galvan, the supershort cut is on its way out. “The pixie’s been hot for awhile but I think we’re going to go away from it into slightly longer, choppy layers that graze the shoulder,” says Melville, coiffeur to Heidi Klum and Demi Moore. “I’ve been cutting this style quite a bit on my clients.”
